3 Ways to Increase Success With a Stubborn Chalazion
A Practical, At-Home Eyelid Care Routine to Encourage Natural Drainage
Struggling with a stubborn chalazion that just won’t go away? You’re not alone. These clogged oil glands can linger for weeks, or even months, when they’re not managed properly.
The good news: with the right technique and consistency, you can significantly improve your chances of resolution at home. Below are 3 targeted strategies designed to help soften, loosen, and encourage drainage of even the most persistent chalazion. Clean your chalazion like an eye care professional. I'm sharing my tips that I give to my patients.
What Is a Chalazion?
A chalazion is a blocked meibomian (oil) gland in the eyelid. Unlike a stye, it’s typically painless and deeper in the eyelid, but that also makes it harder to treat.
When it becomes “stubborn,” it usually means:
-
The contents have thickened and hardened
-
There’s no clear exit pathway for drainage
-
Standard warm compresses alone aren’t enough
-
It's been lingering over 4 weeks
1. Use a Focused Eye Roll After Heating
Heat + targeted, rolling massage = movement
Start by applying heat to the eyelid. The goal is to soften the hardened oils trapped inside the gland.
How to do it:
-
Heat FOCUSED EYE ROLL to a comfortably hot temperature (not burning) - wrist test so you don't burn your eyelid skin
-
Apply to the eyelid for 30 second sessions
-
Use this Focused Eye Roll technique:
-
Roll side to side to soften the eyelid area which will help hardened oil soften. This takes about 10 seconds.
-
For the next 20 seconds, gently roll over the chalazion in small, controlled motions
-
Focus directly on the area of the bump
-
Why it works:
Heat loosens the blockage, and the rolling, massage motion helps mobilize the contents toward the eyelid margin.
2. Stop Treating It Like a Simple Chalazion
Stubborn chalazions need a different approach
Here’s the truth: not all chalazions can drain on their own, especially when they’ve been sitting for weeks.
If you’re still just applying heat and hoping for the best, you may be missing a critical step:
👉 Creating a pathway for drainage
Add the Scrub Step to Your Routine
Use:
How to do it:
-
Apply 1 drop of the cleansing oil to the scrub brush
-
Gently scrub the eyelid margin directly adjacent to the chalazion
-
Scrub 1, 2, 3, 4 times directly on the same area of the eyelid margin
-
Focus on the margin where glands open, not the eyelid skin
Repeat this step throughout the day if needed.
Why this matters:
A stubborn chalazion often has no exit site because the body tries to heal itself. This scrub step:
-
Removes debris and buildup
-
Clears the gland openings
-
Allows trapped material a chance to slowly drain
- Exfoliates the eyelid margin
3. Repeat the Focused Eye Roll After Scrubbing
Timing is everything
Once you’ve scrubbed the eyelid margin, consider going back in with your Focused Eye Roll.
Why?
-
The scrub step opens the exit pathway
-
The rolling motion encourages the debris contents to move and ooze out
Think of it as a two-step system:
-
Open the door (scrub)
-
Guide the contents out (roll)
TRY THIS! This combination is far more effective than either step alone.
My Pro Tips for Faster Results
Stay Consistent
Skipping days = slower progress.
Chalazions respond best to daily, repeated care.
Don’t Rush the Process
Drainage can take time—especially for long-standing bumps.
Always Finish with a Double Cleanse
After these steps above, complete the double cleanse with our probiotic Tea Tree Eyelid & Eyelash Foaming Cleanser to:
-
Wash away eyelid debris that has discharged
-
Keep the eye area clean
-
Support eyelid skin barrier health
Suggested Daily Routine
Before Bedtime:
-
Focused Eye Roll
-
Scrub with Cleansing Oil + Scrub Brush
-
Focused Eye Roll
-
Wash off with Foaming Cleanser
Optional Morning + Midday:
-
Repeat scrub + roll + wash to experiment if additional sessions are beneficial
When to See a Doctor
If your chalazion:
-
Persists beyond a few weeks
-
Continues growing
-
Affects vision
-
Causes pain and/or discomfort
-
Starts oozing green, yellow pus
It may require evaluation by an eye care professional.
TL;DR
A stubborn chalazion doesn’t mean you’re stuck. It means your approach needs to evolve.
By combining:
-
Heat and targeted rolling with Focused Eye Roll
-
Specific rolling techniques with Focused Eye Roll
-
Strategic scrubbing of the eyelid margin to maintain an open exit site for chalazion debris to drain
-
It takes work. If you are lazy or drop off - the chalazion will know (lol). Roll, scrub and wash daily for results.
You are responsible for creating the ideal environment for natural drainage and healing.
Stay consistent, be gentle, and trust the process.

FAQ
How long does it take for a stubborn chalazion to go away?
It can take several weeks to months, depending on consistency and severity. Sometimes it's too stubborn to be cleaned and surgery could be required.
Can I massage a chalazion?
Yes and only after heating the area to avoid irritation and improve effectiveness.
Why isn’t my chalazion draining?
There may be no open exit pathway. Adding a scrub step can help clear the gland openings. The exit is 100% always at the eyelid margin. Never through the eyelid skin.
Do I need surgery?
Not always. Many chalazions improve with consistent at-home care, but persistent cases should be evaluated professionally.
