Eye Crusties in Kids: What Parents Need to Know - Includes Video

By Dr Tanya Gill, OD
If your child wakes up with eye crusties every morning, you're not alone. Many parents assume it's "just sleep in the eyes," but persistent eyelid debris can sometimes be a sign of an underlying eyelid condition that deserves attention.
As a UC Berkeley-trained optometrist who previously worked at a pediatric ophthalmology practice for many years, I frequently evaluated children with chronic eyelid crusting, blepharitis, and eyelid inflammation. Fortunately, a simple daily eyelid hygiene routine can often make a big difference.
Watch: Dr. Tanya Gill, Optometrist explains how to safely clean eye crusties in children using a gentle daily eyelid hygiene routine.

What Causes Eye Crusties?
Eye crusties are dried tears mixed with oil, mucus, bacteria, allergens, and inflammatory debris that collect along the eyelashes while your child sleeps.
Some common causes include:
- Blepharitis
- Eyelid inflammation
- Allergies
- Bacterial overgrowth
- Dry eye
- Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
- Demodex blepharitis (less common in young children)
If eye crusties are persistent, it's important to have your child evaluated by an eye care professional to determine the underlying cause.
Why I Don't Recommend Eyelid Wipes Alone
Parents often ask if they should use eyelid wipes for daily cleaning.
I am not a fan of wipes. While eyelid wipes can remove some surface debris, they primarily provide a wiping action. In many cases, they don't effectively clean along the eyelid margin, where much of the inflammatory debris collects.
My goal is to gently clean where the eyelashes meet the eyelid while helping maintain a healthy eyelid skin barrier.

My Preferred Daily Eyelid Cleaning Routine for Kids
I created the Mini Eyelid Scrub Mitt specifically for children because little eyes need little tools.
The smaller size allows parents to gently clean around the eyelids with greater precision and comfort.
I pair it with Calm Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Spray, a no-sting, tear-free, leave-on eyelid cleanser that's designed for gentle daily use.

Method 1: My Preferred Technique
This method provides the most thorough cleaning.
Step 1
Spray Calm Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Spray directly onto the closed eyelid.
The first few times may surprise younger children, but most become comfortable with the routine after a little practice.
Step 2
Spray the Mini Eyelid Scrub Mitt.
Step 3
Using gentle circular motions, clean along the eyelid and eyelashes.
The textured surface of the mitt helps lift away eye crusties and inflammatory debris rather than simply wiping across the skin.
Method 2: Great for Beginners
If your child is nervous about having the spray applied directly to the eyelid, start here.
Simply:
- Spray Calm Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Spray directly onto the Mini Eyelid Scrub Mitt.
- Gently clean the eyelids and eyelashes.
- You're done.
As your child becomes more comfortable, you can transition to Method 1 for a more comprehensive cleanse.

Why Texture Matters
One reason I developed the Mini Eyelid Scrub Mitt was to create a gentle cleansing tool that offers more than a smooth wipe.
Its textured surface helps remove debris that may remain attached to the eyelid margin while still being gentle enough for children's delicate eyelid skin.
A Simple Routine Parents Can Stick With
Consistency is often the key to healthy eyelids.
A daily cleansing routine may help remove:
- Eye crusties
- Eyelash debris
- Excess oil
- Environmental allergens
- Bacterial buildup
Keeping the eyelids clean may also support a healthier eyelid environment over time.

When Should You See an Eye Doctor?
Schedule an eye examination if your child has:
- Persistent eye crusties
- Red eyelids
- Swollen eyelids
- Recurrent styes
- Recurrent chalazia
- Yellow or green discharge
- Itchy eyelids
- Complaints of eye irritation
An optometrist or ophthalmologist can determine whether the cause is blepharitis, allergies, infection, meibomian gland dysfunction, or another eyelid condition.
Key Takeaways
- Chronic eye crusties often have an underlying cause that should be evaluated.
- Daily eyelid hygiene is an important part of eyelid health.
- A textured cleansing mitt can provide a more thorough cleanse than a simple wipe alone.
- Calm Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Spray offers a gentle, no-sting option for children.
- A pediatric-friendly routine can make daily eyelid cleaning easier for both parents and kids.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes eye crusties in children?
Eye crusties are commonly caused by dried tears mixed with oils, mucus, bacteria, allergens, and inflammatory debris. Blepharitis and eyelid inflammation are common underlying causes.
Are eyelid wipes enough?
Eyelid wipes can remove surface debris, but they may not adequately clean the eyelid margin where inflammatory debris often collects.
How do you clean a child's eyelids?
Use a gentle eyelid cleanser with a soft cleansing tool designed for children's delicate eyelids. Always follow your eye care professional's recommendations.
Can daily eyelid cleaning help prevent styes?
Keeping the eyelids clean may help reduce debris and support healthy eyelid hygiene, which can be an important part of preventing future eyelid problems for some children.
