HOW TO IDENTIFY PROSTAGLANDIN ANALOGS IN EYELASH SERUM BY INGREDIENT LIST

Eyelash serums that utilize a prostaglandin analog (analogue) as the active ingredient come with ocular risks and side effects. Redness, dryness, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), orbital fat loss, darker iris & eyelid pigmentation to name the most common.

BUT HOW DO YOU DECIPHER THE INGREDIENT LIST TO IDENTIFY IF YOUR LASH SERUM CONTAINS A PROSTAGLANDIN ANALOG?

No Ingredient List? Well . . . DO NOT BUY IT!

If you see beautiful before and after photos advertising a lash serum, but no FULL ingredient list is available, DO NOT BUY.

If you get a promo offer for a lash serum, but the ingredient list is listed in ALPHABETICAL order, DO NOT BUY. Ingredients are listed in order of concentration. To me, any list that is in alpha order is suspicious of hiding something. And it's usually the prostaglandin analog!

If you find a lash serum from google searching, but the company lists KEY ingredients but NOT the FULL ingredients list, DO NOT BUY.

Understanding Prostaglandin Analogues

What Are Prostaglandin Analogues?

Prostaglandins are naturally occurring hormones in your body. Their synthetic siblings—prostaglandin analogs—mimic these effects to prolong the growth phase of your eyelashes. That’s how prostaglandin lash serum products work.

Why They’re Used

By stimulating the eyelash follicle, these molecules increase lash length and thickness. This category of lash serum gets those beautiful long and somewhat spidery lashes. Although the healthier choice, lash serums with peptides, biotin, and castor oil do not grow lashes like a prostaglandin analog lash serum. Any packaging telling you otherwise - be very, very suspicious.

How to Spot Them in Your Lash Serum

LOOK FOR THE 'PROST'

When scanning an ingredient list, search for “prost.” That snippet often appears in the chemical names of prostaglandin analogs. If you see it, pause and research that molecule. I'll take the same list above but this time highlight the PROST. Sometimes it's actually quite hard to find. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

  • BimatoPROST
  • Isopropyl CloPROSTenate
  • Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro EthylcloPROSTenolamide
  • LatanoPROST
  • Trifluoromethyl Dechloro EthylPROSTenolamide
  • TafluPROST
  • TravaPROST

INGREDIENT NAME NOT 'BRAND NAME'

Make sure you're looking at the ingredient name, not the brand name when researching your lash serum. Here is a list of brand names. No "PROST" will be found because the brand name is not the same as the actual ingredient name.

  • Xlash Eyelash Enhancer
  • Neulash
  • NeuveauBrow
  • RevitaLash
  • Nutraluxe MD Lash
  • M2 Lashes Eyelash activating serum
  • Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to die for Platinum
  • Rodan and Fields Lash Boost

Got Dry Eyes, Blepharitis, MGD?

For any of my patients that currently have dry eyes, blepharitis, and or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) - sorry, but NO LASH SERUMS with prostaglandins are allowed.

For any of my patients that have a history of at least 1 stye or chalazion, again sorry not sorry - but NO LASH SERUMS with prostaglandins for you.

For my patients that wear contact lenses, a little bit more complicated. A healthy eye gets moved into DAILY replacement contact lenses. An unhealthy eye is a hard no on LASH SERUM and or CONTACT LENSES until the eye problem is resolved.
