Is It Safe To Sleep With Hypoallergenic Mascara Instead of Waterproof Mascara? 😴

If you're reading this, you already know that sleeping in waterproof mascara is bad for you: stye, chalazion, pink eyes, demodex mites overpopulation, blepharitis, and dry eyes. But you are also hoping for a different answer when it comes to hypoallergenic mascara. I’m Dr. Tanya Gill, Optometrist, and today I’m here to answer your question: "Is it safe to sleep with hypoallergenic mascara instead of waterproof mascara?" Let’s explore the differences and what it means for your eye health.
Understanding Mascara Formulas
Mascara comes in various formulas, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Here are the key points:
HYPOALLERGENIC MASCARA
Designed to minimize allergic reactions;
Generally milder on the eyes;
Usually not as long-lasting.
WATERPROOF MASCARA
Resistant to water and sweat;
Providing long wearing time;
More challenging to remove.

Gentler Formula:
Hypoallergenic mascara is formulated to be gentle on sensitive eyes, and in general reduces the risk of irritation when left on overnight as compared to waterproof mascara. -
Potential Risks:
Even though it’s milder, hypoallergenic mascara is still mascara formulated with waxes and oils. Leaving ANY mascara on overnight can lead to clogged lash follicles or clogged oil glands, which can lead to styes, etc. -
Hygiene is the Answer:
No matter the eye makeup type, you gotta remove it all before bed to prevent buildup which can lead to inflammation over time. -
Regular Eye Exam:
If you wear eye makeup, ask your optometrist at your next eye exam to rate your eye makeup removal skills.

Gentler Formula:
It's Still a Big Fat NO:
My patients don't like hearing this either. While hypoallergenic mascara is typically gentler than waterproof mascara, it’s still best not to sleep with any mascara on to prevent stye, chalazion, pink eyes, demodex mites overpopulation, blepharitis, and dry eyes. Proper removal is essential for maintaining happy, beautiful eyes. 😊
